Where do you get your scientific information from??
If you are a scientists you'll probably answer journals or colleagues. But what if you're ordinary Joe Bloggs? You might answer Wikipedia, National Geographic, the newspapers.
And who is writing this? For wikipedia it can be anyone in the world with access to a computer.... Documentaries are always sensationalised to give you the most thrilling information but not necessarily all of the facts, and newspapers only write what sells, so they pick and choose what facts they use and sensationalise everything.
So what do we do about it? Well one answer would be to produce a scientific journal that uses everyday language that is available worldwide to the general public, and in it publish all the scientific findings that will make a difference to the everyday lives of people. I hope that one days this will become a possibility but for now we need to come up with a way to get the new discoveries across without allowing the journalists and producers of this world to sensationalise everything. Would only presenting them with boring facts in press releases help with this? Probably not, as "boring" doesn't sell papers and is not worth making a documentary over. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. Comment below.
