The Association of British Science Writers

A quick google search of "science journalism" (for a job search I should add) brought up an interesting website I should have looked for a long time ago. There is an association of British science writers, who "exist to help those who write about science and technology, and to improve the standard of science journalism in the UK". This all sounds wonderful, but where is this association when the Mail is spouting absolute twaddle about "global warming" coming to annihilate all of the living things on the planet within the next 50 years? OK so that may be slightly exaggerated, but readers I am sure you will understand where I am coming from.
And here's why I am so confused, the ABSW claims to have been founded in 1947, that's over 60 years of hanging around, and they don't seem to have done much to keep sensationalist rubbish out of the media. So what are they doing? Well apparently they are very good a networking and posting jobs. Apparently even good at organising science journalism conferences, but apparently they're not very good at keeping bad science out of the media and especially the Mail.
So here's what I think; I propose that it is made a law or at least a very forceful guideline within the UK, the EU and the World that all journalists who write about science must become a member of either this association or the equivalent association in their country. This means the BBC and other large Media outlets ensuring that their employees are aware of such associations, and maybe between the scientists, the journalists and the science journalists we can stick to cold hard (but interesting) science.
