Suddenly all online news sites, and geological social media is related to Earthquakes, and what happens when they're deeper or shallower, What the magnitude means, and other links to natural hazards sites.
It's a shame that people aren't interested before disaster strikes and people loose their lives. I am willing to bet that the level of science communication was much the same before the Sumatra Earthquake which caused the boxing day Tsunami, and now every time there is a Tsunami it's linked to the Sumatra one, and I'm also willing to bet that most of today's young adults only have their earthquake information from this and other (such as the Haiti) natural disasters.
